Rethinking AI in Education: College to host workshop on ethical AI integration
September 23, 2024
With artificial intelligence (AI) reshaping the educational landscape, educators are navigating a new world of possibilities and challenges. Jackson College and the Jackson County Intermediate School District will host a daylong workshop, From Values to Vision: Rethinking Our Approaches to AI in Education, on Saturday, Oct. 12 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in JC’s Bert Walker Hall Community Rooms.
After nearly two years since the introduction of ChatGPT and the widespread use of other AI tools like Gemini and Magic School, the education sector has entered a new era. This interactive workshop will offer educators an opportunity to explore how to integrate AI ethically and effectively into their classrooms while addressing concerns about academic honesty and evolving student needs.
Dr. Troy Hicks, professor of English and education at Central Michigan University, will lead the workshop. As Chair of the Department of Teacher and Special Education and Director of the Chippewa River Writing Project, Dr. Hicks brings a wealth of experience in both AI and education. He will guide participants through a day of exploration, offering practical tools and insights to help teachers align AI with their educational values.
Agenda Highlights:
- Part 1: Articulating Our Values as Educators in the Age of AI
- Part 2: Exploring Prompt Engineering Across AI Tools
- Part 3: Rethinking Assignments in the Age of AI
- Part 4: From Ideas to Implementation: Rapid Prototyping with AI Tools
Designed for educators in grades 4-12, this workshop will help teachers re-envision assignments and AI’s role in the classroom (5 SCECH continuing education hours). Participants will be equipped with strategies to incorporate AI tools in a way that supports ethical education, enhances learning, and meets their students’ needs. Bring your curiosity and willingness to play with AI tools to this interactive workshop where we will re-envision our approach to AI.
The cost to attend the workshop is $25 (paid through the JCISD system for local educators); Jackson College faculty and staff are free. Educators are encouraged to bring their laptops and an open mind to this interactive and hands-on event.
